Systems engineer for astronomical project
With a new generation of survey telescopes and cameras the study of the variable Universe is changing rapidly. Millions of objects can be detected changing in the sky every night, motivating the development of fast astronomical alert processing systems. This includes real–time processing of the raw data for alert generation, real–time annotation and classification of the alerts and real–time reaction to interesting alerts using available astronomical resources. We are building a new alert classification and reaction system called ALeRCE: Automatic Learning for the Rapid Classification of Events. ALeRCE is an initiative led by an interdisciplinary and interinstitutional group of scientists from U. Católica (DCC), U. Chile (CMM, DIE, DAS), U. Concepción (DCC), the Millennium Institute for Astrophysics – MAS, and U. Nacional Andres Bello – UNAB (DCF) in Chile, in partnership with international researchers from Caltech (CD3), U. Harvard (IACS–SEAS) and U. Washington (Dirac).
In the context of the ALeRCE project we need a systems engineer. We are looking for highly motivated people with experience in architecting, integrating, deploying, testing and maintaining computational systems. In particular, for a computational system that will run the software for the rapid processing of alerts coming from large astronomical telescopes such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the team by integrating the software products produced by our collaboration. She/he will be based at the Center for Mathematical Modeling, U. Chile and the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics and may be required to visit the different participating institutions as the project unfolds. Advanced knowledge of Linux system administration, proficiency in scripting languages such as python, good understanding in compiling software libraries, and skills in integration of software via scripting interfaces are required.
This job offer will be valid until the position is filled.
